The melody of "Pastures of Plenty" is based on a traditional folk song called "Pretty Polly".

Notes on track: TITOLI from PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI (1964) (Part 2)
"Pastures of Plenty" has since been recorded in many different arrangements. Ennio Morricone's orchestration, with Peter Tevis singing, originates from 1962.
Play the song:
mp3 The musical bridge (1:36 to 1:48), not present in the original "Pretty Polly" tune, was apparently the idea of Peter Tevis.
About Morricone's "Pastures of Plenty" version:
link In 1964 the same orchestration was used for the instrumental "Titoli" piece belonging to the soundtrack of the film PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI. Peter Tevis singing was simply replaced by Alessandro Alessandroni whistling.
The initial vinyl single release still has the 1962 Franco Potenza choir singing "With the wind", a remnant of the "Pastures of Plenty" lyrics.
Play the "Titoli" version with the choir singing "With the wind":
mp3 Eventually the Franco Potenza choir (1962) was replaced by the Alessandro Alessandroni choir (1964) now singing "We can fight", cutting the remaining ties to the Woody Guthrie lyrics.
The 1962 'Coro di Franco Potenza' can still be heard from 1:36 to 1:48.
Since there are actually two choirs present, neither are credited on the original vinyl single and LP.
Play the final "Titoli" version with the Alessandroni choir singing "We can fight":
mp3 The piece is registered in the SIAE database under the title "Titoli".
jpg Peter Tevis received a considerable amount of money for his musical bridge (lasting 12 seconds), after the PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI soundtrack turned out to be a worldwide success.
